Bellata (near Narrabri): Large areas of the Northern NSW alluvial plains are affected by subsoil constraints to crop and pasture production. At this site at Bellata, high soil chloride levels along with surface crusting due to sodicity had, in the past, severely limited production.
This trial looked at finding a perennial pasture alternative to manage hostile subsoils and surface crusting. The trial was undertaken at this site because the soil type in question had been continuously grazed for many years with a constant stocking rate. This practice on a dispersive clay soil had led to poor soil structure leaving the country with very little and poor quality feed. The site had very poor infiltration rates and most of the annual rainfall was lost to run-off and evaporation.
The success of tropical pasture species and lucerne are shown in this film clip.
