Arthurville (near Wellington): From 2001 to 2003, this saline site was expanding, estimated to be 5 fold in 18 months, even with drought conditions. The area is in the flow line at the bottom of a large bowl-like catchment where groundwater comes to the surface, leaving the subsoil permanently wet. There are patches of very saline land interspersed with less saline conditions, and areas of recent tree death. The outskirts of the area (not in contact with groundwater) are non-saline. The area is typical of other sites within a 200 km radius.
Bernard Sheridan shows how he has returned these areas to productivity with a shot-gun mixture of pastures, with puccinellia proving to be a saviour.
